Unlike spaces designed for specific work tasks or for setting a mood, in other words, "lighting for people"; Retail spaces should be thought of as "lighting for merchandise", providing a general attraction and excitement to get the customer through the door and into the space and then providing additional emphasis on the merchandise to get the customer to make a purchase. A retail lighting system ideally should have several layers of light, perhaps include some color on/in key architectural features, and make practical use of good vertical illumination on both the merchandise as well as the architecture.
