Design Philosophy

Our design philosophy centers around the concept of "layered lighting," which involves the application of task lighting, ambient lighting and architectural highlighting as well as appropriate tasteful color accenting.

By applying each "layer" of light to a space, rather than applying a uniform, general level of light, several different elements in the user's environment can be addressed individually, with all elements combining to achieve the overall effect. With the use of fairly inexpensive lighting controls, these individual lighting layers can be adjusted to create varying conditions within the same space. The Alabama Judicial Building at left illustrates this philosophy (click for article).

In a residential or hospitality setting for instance, this allows a space to adapt to different functions, providing different "scenes" for relaxation, dining, clean-up, food-preparation, intimacy, office tasks, etc.

In a non-residential space, layering the light gives the occupant a better visual balance in their environment through the use of lighted vertical surfaces and the ability to adjust lighting levels, via controlling each lighting layer in their task area.

Using this philosophy in designing lighting systems for a whole host of space types, we have been able to successfully satisfy the comfort, productivity and image requirements of our clients.
