The overall goal of lighting for educational spaces is to provide a visual environment for both the students and the faculty that is supportive of the learning process. Providing a lighting system that allows occupants to accurately, quickly and comfortably identify and perform their visual task is key. Layering light to provide several levels and types of illumination is a much better alternative to the the previous methodology of one fairly high uniform illuminance throughout the facility, due to the range of visual tasks, including VDT's, currently found in educational spaces. Maintenance and energy are also primary design issues, with daylight harvesting in classroom and general spaces a prevalent means of saving energy by reducting the electric load in direct proportion to daylight penetration.
