The electronic office has introduced an entirely new manner in which work is performed and how the space is lighting for these new computer-based tasks. Instead of thinking in terms of horizontal illuminance levels, the task (LCD or other monitor) is now vertical. The challenges are two-fold and both relating to eye adaptation. The first, reducing or eliminating reflected glare on the screen from the lighting system and the second, understanding that the user is now looking at an immediate vertical surface with surrounding 3-dimensional surfaces, causing potential adaptation issues in the field of vision. A layered lighting system is now necessary in office spaces versus the old “one type for all situations” approach.
